Part II · Chapter 18

E-Commerce & D2C Exports

Can a small Indian maker sell straight to shoppers abroad, one parcel at a time, and still keep a profit? This chapter is for craft workshops, food and tea brands, and anyone tempted by a cross-border marketplace or a storefront of their own. It opens with a tea founder who shipped garden-fresh parcels to American homes years before the rules made it easy, then explains the 2026 policy changes that turned the single parcel into a recognised export unit. It works through one marketplace sale to show how commissions, advertising and returns eat into the price, compares the post, the courier and commercial cargo, and sets out the two costs a brand's own website hides: duty demanded at the customer's door, and returns that cost more to ship back than to make. Two Indian brands, one selling freshness and one selling design, show how parcels can lead to shelves. Afterwards you can judge whether your product is built for the parcel lane or belongs in a container.

Key ideas

  1. Trade rules now count one shopper's order as a proper export, which turns the parcel from a workaround into a business model.
  2. A marketplace margin is set less by the product than by the category it sits in and the advertising needed to hold its ranking, and a rival can raise the second at will.
  3. For many brands the parcel is a beginning rather than the business: it buys quick evidence of demand and a name abroad, while scale and steady profit arrive through shops and wholesalers.
